To our great sadness, presenter, programme maker and music journalist Thijs Bonger passed away on Tuesday, June 4th. In the 20 years that he worked for the Concertzender, Thijs created beautiful, long-running series such as Geniale Muziekvrienden, Lastige Leerling, Herkansing voor Hummel, De piano-etude, van oefening tot kunst en Gesprek onder Acht Ogen. The latter programme was about lesser-known string quartets by Haydn. Thijs had great admiration for Haydn and felt that this composer was still underappreciated. The passion for music always resonated in Thijs' programs. His goal was to take his listeners along and interest them in the music he found important. He did this in such a convincing way that he attracted a very unique and new audience of listeners to him with his programmes. A few weeks before his death and just before his voice gave out, Thijs was given the opportunity to talk about music and in particular about his great passion Joseph Haydn in the Bach & Co programme. Part XXXVIII (End) • Astonishment about the beauty of a totally unknown string quartet via the car radio lead to a three year thorough investigation, a worldwide hunt on publications and CDs with his music and… 38 hours of radio, titled 'Herkansing voor Hummel'. Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was once the most famous composer of Europe, but soon after he passed away he was forgotten. Today will go about his final days. Despite his health problems, there are still some pieces he's able to compose. He writes an interesting and partially groundbreaking series of piano etudes op.125. An example to Chopin, great admirer of Hummel. A selection of that with a single reference to etudes which Chopin has grafted on those of Hummel. And an elegant and virtuous work for violin and piano.

Thijs Bonger: musical story teller. According to himself, he has made at least 38 independent programmes and series. Titles include What !?..Is this by Czerny? Mendelssohn and the Elves, Anatoli Ljadov andSchubert's unique virtuoso eruption (about the Wanderer Fantasy). His magnum opus must be the 38 episodes of Herkansing voor Hummel which portrayed the Bohemian Johan Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) as famous pianist, composer and innovative teacher . Thijs is currently working on the series Genial Friends, about the musical friendship between Josef Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. All these episodes can be heard via Concertzender.nl
