Festival de Muzen 2024 presents

‘Baarnsche meesters‘ in the Witte kerkje in Baarn

Festival de Muzen is organised by our programme maker Storm Bakker (ProgJazz) and returns in 2024 as a three-day event for music lovers in the Witte Kerkje in Baarn. The festival takes place on October 11/12/13. Writer/musician Stormvogel has invited several well-known artists from Baarn to take part including master drummer Lucas van Merwijk, top saxophonist Peter Lieberom and international dancer Sarada Sarita. The Friday and Saturday evenings are dedicated to Mystery Plays: Jazzbarock Ballet & Poetry, with different artists participating each evening. On Sunday afternoon there is a concert titled Jazz on the Amer with special guests from Baarn and surrounding areas. The afternoon includes the presentation of the Amer Award by Mark Röell, the mayor of Baarn.

Mystery plays
Mystery plays were in vogue at the Burgundian Court in the late Middle Ages, and combined different  artistic disciplines. Our host on Friday (October 11) is Duke Philip the Good (Rudi de Graaff), who sailed up the Eem in the year 1427 in his floating fortress armed with blunderbusses. Stormvogel tells the story of the region’s legendary history with the necessary poetic freedom. Dancer Sarada Sarita, best known in Baarn for the Marut Jorquera dance school, dances to music from the fifteenth century, for this occasion performed on synthesizers and introduced by the Baarn bass-baritone Remmert Velthuis (Friday) and the enchanting singer/harpist Wieke Garcia (Saturday). Both vocalists also took part in Stormvogel’s Eemsaga 1997.
Jazz on the Amer
The final day, Sunday afternoon, October 13, is less mysterious, but full of swing. As part of ‘Jazz on the Amer’, Lieberom, Stormvogel and Van Merwijk improvise in the old-fashioned way, with special guests from Baarn and surrounding areas. One of them is mayor Mark Röell, himself a descendant of the residents of Drakenburg Castle. He will present the Amer Award, an award for someone who has made an important contribution to culturue in Eemland and who would otherwise often be overlooked.
