thu 31 oct 2024
Theme: Early Music

In Early Delights of Thursday, October 31 at 20:00 CET, attention is paid to All Souls’ Day, a holy day in the Western Roman Catholic tradition.

All Souls’ Day is celebrated on November 2 and is a day when the deceased are remembered. Relatives place flowers on the grave and light candles for their deceased loved ones.
The day of remembrance for the deceased originates from the Benedictine monastic tradition of Cluny, where this day of remembrance was celebrated for the first time in 998. In the thirteenth century it was given the name All Souls’ Day.

In Early Delights we hear a Gregorian Requiem, Lamentos by Claudio Monteverdi (the well-known “Pianto della Madonna” by soprano Emma Kirkby), Johann Heinrich Schmelzer and Johann Christoph Bach, and an instrumental Tombeau by Jean-Féry Rebel.
