Organ Works in Friesland

thu 14 nov 2024
Theme: Early Music

We start a new series of programmes in Organ Works on Thursday, November 14 at 21:00 CET. After the series about Unknown Organs in Groningen and Northern Germany, we now turn attention to the province of Friesland, organ country par excellence.

The province of Friesland has approximately 350 historically important organs. It has also been an important centre of organ building for five centuries. The oldest organs in the province date from the 17th century.

In the coming weeks in Organ Works you will hear not only the well-known organs from Friesland but also some that are almost unknown outside the province.

We start with the largest organ in the province, which is located in the Grote or Jacobijner church in Leeuwarden. The organ was built in the early 18th century by the organ builder Christian Müller.

In this first episode of this series you will hear compositions by former organists of the Grote Kerk. The well-known names include Reijnold Popma van Oevering, Jan Paardekoper, George Stam, Piet Post, Jan Jongepier, Theo Jellema and Gerwin Hoekstra. They will feature regulalrly in this series in the future.

This episode starts with a recording of a concert given by the current organist of the church: Peter van der Zwaag. He plays works by Reijnold Popma van Oevering and Jan Paardekoper.

Organ Works can be heard on every second Thursday of the month, from 21:00 to 22:00 CET.
