Englishwoman Bex Burch became fascinated by the gyil, a large wooden xylophone which is played in Northern Ghana. She learned to play from the best and would use that experience in creating music for her group Vula Viel, which may sound Western, but is heavily influenced by Ghanese traditions. Guitarist Derek Gripper from Zuid-Afrika coincidentally came into contact with the music of Malinse virtuoso on the kora, Toumani Diabaté. Hij dissected that play on the 21-string harp-lute and adapted the pieces for the classic guitar.
