Broken in the bud – Ernst Mielck

  1. This is the ninth in a series of programs featuring music by composers who died young, under the title “Broken in the bud”

This installment is dedicated to Ernst Mielck (1877-1899). He was born in Vyborg, at the time the second largest city in Finland, but today it is in Russia. Mielck’s family was of German descent. From an early age, he was sickly.

Mielck composed, among other works, a string quartet, a string quintet and a symphony, and two cantatas for choir and orchestra in German. He was considered an outsider in Finnish musical life because of his German ancestry and orientation. Just as his fame began to spread, he died of tuberculosis just before his 22nd birthday. You will hear a cross-section of his compositions in this Walk.
