75 Years of Blue Note

tue 1 jul 2014 17:00 hrs

Episode 5: Organist as bass player. In 1955, Alfred Lion spotted pianist Herbie Nichols’ talent, but he didn’t gain much fame until decades later. Blue Note is releasing the very first 12 inch LP under Jimmy Smith’s name. He is known not only for the renewal of the Hammond organ, but he is also the inventor of the organist-as-bass-player phenomenon. Reid Miles’ fine sleeve designs for the Blue Note records are a milestone in the history of graphic design.
