Musical Romanticism, explored by Pieter de Oude.

Gabriel Pierné definitely belongs to the unknown, unloved category. His brilliant and very French music deserves more time in the spotlight. Here we present you with an hour of his best music. It carefully orchestrates portraits of landscapes and cathedrals, alternating with subtle symphonic poems in which the piano plays a concertante part.

Pierné was a pianist himself, confident of his playing and of his scores. So much so, that his fellow student Debussy was intimidated by it, and didn’t hide his envy of him. Later on though, Debussy, with his ideas on modern French music, would completely overshadow poor Pierné .

 Programme:

  1.   Gabriel Pierné – Fantasie-Ballet op.6
  2.   Gabriel Pierné – Paysages franciscaines, op.43
  3.   Gabriel Pierné – Les Cathédrales
  4.   Gabriel Pierné – Poème Symphonique, op.37
  5.   Gabriel Pierné – Etude de concert, op.13
BBC Philharmonic conducted by Juanjo Mena / Jean Efflam Bavouzet, piano
