Episode; Houtfestival in Haarlem 2024 revisited
I Ustad Noor Bakhsh (Pakistan) ; II Hamraaz

On 16 June 2024 the 78-year-old Ustad Noor Bakhsh from the Balochistan-region in Pakistan gave a performance at the Houtfestival in Haarlem. He is well-known all over the world for his mastery of the benju, a keyboard-fitted zither, which he has been playing since he was little.

Noor Bakhsh plays old songs and compositions from Balochistan and the whole of Pakistan, but also Persian and Kurdish tunes, even Bollywood numbers. He writes his own compositions and has developed a personal experimental style, which includes a lot of room for improvisation.

In the second part of the broadcast, also recorded on 16 June, we hear the duo Hamraaz. Hamraaz is a collaboration between Khorshid Dadbeh from Iran, who plays the tar, tanbur and baglama, and Lucie Lelaurain from France on duduk and flute. They met each other at the world-renowned music school Codarts in Rotterdam.

They bring us modern compositions that are inspired by the music modes and maqam melody types from the rich musical traditions of Iran and Armenia.
