¡Mambo!

wed 12 feb 2025 00:00 hrs

In this 95th episode of Mambo, we’re starting a series on the New York band Tipica 73.

The band was founded in 1973, and originally consisted of five members from Ray Barretto’s band, such as the famous singer Adalberto Santiago and percussionist Johnny “Dandy” Rodriguez. They were the first salsa band from the States who recorded their music in Cuba.

The word ‘salsa’ was launched in New York in 1972. While the band Irakere created a completely new sound of jazz in Cuba, the New York Tipica 73 also innovated music. The band presented the popular Cuban danse music as progressive jazz.

In 1974, the Puerto Rican Nelson Gonzalez joined Tipica 73. He was brilliant at the ‘tres’, a special Cuban guitar and was a star in Cuba.
