In JazzNotJazz, we’ve compiled a unique mix tape from a hundred years of jazz recordings, adding some meaningful and sometimes frivolous facts. As it’s also about The Soul of Jazz, there will definitely be some detours into affiliated styles. We have (irregularly) recurring elements like “Ellington Train Songs”, “Jazz Cameo’s”, “Keith Plays Miles”, “Jazz B4 ‘44” and “More is Better”.

In this episode, bass players seem to be the theme. Underworld in an episode of JazzNotJazz for example? Possible because of the bass loop. Yet another Train Song by Duke Ellington? Yes, but with his brand new bassist. Bill Laswell and Charles Mingus speak for themselves. Which naturally brings us to two examples of acquired taste. We will visit places such as Jerusalem, Manhattan New York City, Cardiff, Sudan, a Turkish bath and Mingus’ psychiatrist’s office.
