Religious music: Part 1 of the St. Luke Passion, written by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1744.
Telemann, while working as musical director in Hamburg, produced a new Passion every year. Sometimes even more than one – he wrote in total over fourty Passions. Out of this incredible amount, about twenty Passions were passed on intact and complete.
The version that is based on the gospel of Luke stands out, because of its great power of emotional expression. Telemann was a master at combining profoundness with accessibility for a wider audience.
Part 2 will be broadcast in the episode of Missa etcetera on 24 April 2025.
