Morocco: Sharqi, The Oriental music of Morocco.
Morocco is rich in diverse music styles. In this episode we zoom in on a style that was thriving between 1950s and 1970s : the Oriental music of Morocco, locally called “Sharqi”. The word “Sharqi” means “Oriental” and refers to the influences from the Middle East, where this music originated. The music is based on the typical middle-eastern traditional maqams (modes), certain singing styles and other techniques related to Tarab (the essence of Oriental traditional music). Moroccan composers and singers -some of whom are a bit forgotten- have adopted this music adding a strong Moroccan touch and made (especially between the 1950s and 70s) many successful hits which are loved until today.
