Producer and host Thijs Bonger continues his search through the life and works of Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837). In part VI a selection of his string quartets, the Te Deum and Quod in orbe.
Around 1800 the string quartet was immensely popular. Anything that was moveable and immoveable was arranged by this medium, even complete symphonies and operas. That is why it was a kind of Spotify in this period. But also music originally written for a string quartet is very popular. Hummel wrote three quartets, probably in 1804. And then he quitted the genre. Did he feel Beethoven breathing down his neck? We will play a selection of these quartets. It is a mystery why this beautiful music has never been performed. Because Hummel was still in the employment of count Esterhazy he had to concentrate himself on composing religious music. In 1805 and 1806 he wrote a Te Deum and a Quod in orbe. Both are very much worth listening to.
