*Balfolk is music that is played on live dance nights. The music can exist of a collection West European dances, like the Irish and Scottish dances, also called céilídh and dances of the bal populaire in France etc. Couple dances but also group dances are performed, like the Mazurka, the Jig or the Cercle. There is a lot of interaction between the dancers and musicians. This is what makes Balfolk playful, sociable and full of atmosphere.
Lirio often performs in the Netherlands but also abroad. Based on and inspired by traditional music and dance they make their own compositions. Often at the end of the dance when the band is finished but not everyone wants to go home they play another set. All kinds of dancers who also turn out to be musicians take out their instruments to play some music on the dancefloor and entertain the rest of the dancers. Regularly the musicians who earlier that evening were on the stage join them as well. It is an event that over the last couple of years increased in popularity in the Netherlands, thanks to bands like Lirio. Also: http://www.balfolk.nl/
The recording has been made in the Pieternel, the famous extension of the Pieterskerk in Utrecht.
