Mihály Mosonyi, countryman and contemporary of Franz Liszt.
Mihály Mosonyi was born Michael Brand in Austria-Hungary in 1815. He later changed his first name to the more Hungarian-sounding Mihály, and his last name to Mosonyi, in honour of the Moson region where he was born. His early works still have a distinctly German-Austrian flavour, but in his later pieces, the Hungarian aspect becomes increasingly prominent.
On this broadcast, you will hear what some consider to be Mosonyi’s best work from his early period: his Piano Concerto. This composition wasn’t discovered until 1950, in a music library in Budapest.
