Nordic Sounds
In the new Folkit! programme Nordic sounds we take you along authentic, but also contemporary roots music from the countries where the Northern Lights make their appearance.
The climatic conditions are often harsh, with cold weather and precipitation. So the subtext of this programme: “Wood fire, woolly hats and mittens” is pretty self-explanatory. A programme with heart-warming music from the far north and east of Europe”. The journey extends from the North Atlantic islands (groups) such as The Faroe Islands, Iceland, The Orkneys, of course the Scandinavian countries, but also the Baltic States and the northern regions in and around Russia. A journey that shows surprisingly beautiful, sometimes very intimate, but just as much exhilarating music and that is accompanied by a lot of variety and variation.
In this first edition, we give a limited overview of the contemporary music scene from the Faroe Islands. From strictly vocal to exuberant accompaniment with electronics. The Faroe Islands are mainly on the map because of singer Eivor, but the autonomous archipelago with a limited number of inhabitants harbours a remarkable amount of musical talent. In the past, the islanders lived in great isolation, as a result of which musical evolution proceeded slowly. For centuries, there were hardly any instruments and the music was strictly vocal and only supported by rhythmic steps of dancers. Now we see that the contemporary music from the Faroe Islands has many influences: classical, Celtic, Scandinavian, jazz, pop and rock, electronic music complements and merges with the ancient songs. A true eclectic process. You will hear, among others, Eivor, Valravn, Yggdrasil, Kvonn, Kata, Kari Sverrisson and Orka.
