Live recording Rajery during concert Africa Festival Hertme 2013.
Last year was the 25th anniversary of the Africa Festival Hertme. This festival has grown to be the most important African music event in the Netherlands. On 7 July 2013, valiha player Rajery from Madagascar was performing on the sunny Hertme podium.
At age 15, Rajery taught himself how to play the valiha, and that will not have been easy, because he lost the fingers on his right hand at a very young age.
The Valiha is a tube zither, made of bamboo with 14 strings or more, with a sound that is sort of a mix between harpsichord, kora and sanza.
Rajery is a Renaissance man. He is a master of the valiha, leader of his own band, founder of a modern valiha orchestra with 23 soloists, and he has written the book “The Secret of the Valiha”.
During the concert he is accompanied by Dadi, guitar and vocals, Ratax, drums and vocals, and Fefy, bass guitar and vocals.
