13:30 – stage: De Utrechtse Muziekoorlog
‘De Utrechtse Muziekoorlog’ (The Utrecht Music War) is a production based on the turbulent times in the history of Utrecht music. Around 1920, naming Jan van Gilse the new conductor of the Utrechts Stedelijk Orchestra stirred up a lot of bad blood. Anti-German sentiments, seeing the First World War had just ended, were in play. Feared music critic Willem Pijper didn’t agree with the decision and climbed into his razor-sharp pen. Things heated up so much, Van Gilse at one point refused to conducted if Pijper was in the audience. Both Van Gilse and Pijper were also composers. So this is a great premise to play their music. Attached to the performance are two members of the world renowned Utrecht String Quartet and two student of the Utrecht Conservatoire they invited along. The script is by Coen Cornelis and is performed by Jos Nargy and Joep Hendrikx.

Utrecht conductor and composer Jan van Gilse – who was also the president of musical licencing organisation BUMA -was one of the first musicians during German occupation who openly announced he would not work with Germans and would not become member of the Kultuurkamer. This led to him being fired, having to go into hiding and his music became forbidden and was even destroyed. Two of Van Gilse’s sons were heavily involved with the resistance and were executed. In 1940 Van Gilse wrote an opera about Thijl Uilenspieghel, which is set in the 16th century, when Flanders was occupied by the Spanish. This opera will be performed in the fall of 2017 by the Utrechts Studenten Concert, with among its soloists Anthony Heidweiler.
