Underrated music schools in the Netherlands
When you hear music by a Dutch composer, they will most likely have attended a school in The Hague or Amsterdam. Those are the music schools that have given the Netherlands its own identity, after all. But in this programme, we will play music from composers that have studied at the schools in Rotterdam and Maastricht. The school in Rotterdam is characterised by its fondness for neo-expressionistic idiom in Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s spirit. The composers from Maastricht make stimulating music that is still pleasing to the ear, and as simple as complex as it likes.
