Concerts from around the country, recorded by Concertzender
Chamber music by Beethoven, Debussy, Brett, Brahms, and Alkan.
Today, Concertzender Live Classical has a diverse episode featuring music in a small line-up. Alkan, Brahms, Beethoven, and a premiere in Amsterdam by Brett Dean. And it’s all recorded at the main stage of the ‘Muziekgebouw aan het IJ’. First, we’ll meet the musicians of The Chamber Music Society from the Lincoln Center in New York; they’ll play one of Beethoven’s magical string trios. Music that isn’t played a whole lot, but it will surprise you! After that, we’ll immediately hear Debussy’s Rhapsody, a unique composition for saxophone but played on the clarinet. The Seven Signals, written by the Australian composer Brett Dean was made especially for the New York ensemble. The seven short parts for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano are full of references to different signalling systems like morse code and semaphore. Brahms’ first piano quartet is a proper conclusion to this programme about chamber music. Finally, we’ll listen to a piano sonata written by Beethoven and a unique piano piece written by the 19th-century piano virtuoso Charles-Valentin Alkan. These pieces were played to commemorate Youri Egorov.
