Episode : Houtfestival 2024, Alex Figueira and Tufan Derince
In this broadcast, recordings made by the Concertzender on June 16, 2024 at the Houtfestival that takes place annually in the city park, the Haarlemmerhout, in Haarlem.
This Venezuelan-Portuguese musician Alex Figueira is a DJ, record collector and has his own record store, record label and music production studio. In 2023 he released his solo debut entitled “Mentallogenic”. On this album he fuses African, Caribbean and Latin American rhythms with electronics and influences from psychedelics. With his innovative and experimental approach, he creates music that is surprising, but still sounds familiar.
We continue with a piece of the performance of the virtuoso music with the Turkish-Kurdish Tufan Derince. Tufan is originally from Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, but is now based in Rotterdam. Derince grew up with the sounds of Kurdish culture, from laments and epic poetry to raw folk dances. At a young age, he fell in love with the electric sounds that came out of Diyarbakir when the ban on Kurdish music was lifted. His music is an overdriven, often wild reinterpretation of the traditional folk songs that accompany the powerful dances at Kurdish weddings.
Recording technique: Wijnand de Groot .
