After years of being the face, voice and purveyor of songs for 10,000 Maniacs, Nathalie Merchant focused on her solo career after the MTV Unplugged album in 1993. Her first record under her own name Tigerlily appeared in 1995. After three studio albums she changed course and released an album with purely folk and traditional songs. We chose that album for this episode of Disc-Cover. Maybe The House Carpenter’s Daughter isn’t the best album of the American singer, but it has played a crucial role in her career. After all, after this album, in which she goes into depths of the American and Anglo-Saxon folk music is the start of her double CD Leave Your Sleep, a masterpiece on itself. On it she is accompanied by a variety of folk and roots musicians. And still…also production wise is The House Carpenter’s Daughter a sublime album, on which the fire is crackling, you can smell the countryside, the hardships of the people, the advantages and disadvantages are expressed.
