1977: the turbulent years of the sixties are way behind us. But a lot of things happened in the past decade. One of those things is the renewed interest in traditional music, brought by young musicians, often students, in a contemporary format. They research old singers and musicians, from whom they sign up the songs issued. Looking into dusty songbooks in museums and restoring old instruments. Italy is one of the countries of the folk revival. But knowing that cultural differences appear even within country borders, Italy is probably one of the most diversified countries. The music from the north is not the music from the south. The countryside music differs from the music of the cities. One enthusiastic group originally from around Naples has been working for several years now to come up with the ‘contemporary Napolitan song’. And the Naples region historically contains many varying backgrounds and consequently a variety of many musical influences. Even so, Nuova Compagna di Canto Popolare is considered an authority in bringing the authentic and contemporary Napolitan song. In 1977 a crucial album was published, which significantly disposed the variety but moreover is showed a unity thanks to the strong performance. 11 mesi e 29 giorni contains some of the most beautiful and intense songs by Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare. Before this album was released, the music was still a bit unpolished and rough. Unpolished turned into honest on “11 mesi e 29 giorni”. Later, the NCCP repeated itself with similar albums but the energy and experience on “11 mesi e 29 giorni” was never achieved again. The group still exists – in a rather changed form – but the fierce fire has disappeared, the productions now sound sophisticated.
