1. The Clan of The Rotte River
(is a film) Directed by: Stephanie Ascanio
Music on this showby: Iván Medellín
Project Summary
This cinematic and musical project was created by Stephanie Ascanio G. (director) and Iván Medellín (composer and music producer) in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, during May and June 2023, and later developed in Bogotá, Colombia. It builds on Stephanie’s previous experience in visual creation for artists and projects within Bogotá’s cumbia, jazz, and avant-garde scenes, where she explored the relationship between visual experimentation and live sound performances.
This work led them to an artist residency at WORM, a cutting-edge cultural space in Rotterdam. During the residency, they developed a cinematic project accompanied by original music composed in WORM’s music studio, utilizing analog, modular, and granular synthesizers, as well as optical instruments.
The project, titled The Clan of the Rotte River, examines Rotterdam’s relationship with the dynamics of developed cities, focusing on how global cultural homogenization interacts with local traditions and immigrant communities that have lived in the city for decades. Through five short films, it addresses themes such as rhythm, forms, change, identity, and diversity, reflecting on the coexistence of global influences and cultural resistances that persist in the city’s daily life. The project’s visual proposal incorporates elements of experimental cinema, such as high-contrast black-and-white imagery, photographic noise, and layered visuals. Its musical approach draws inspiration from genres like ambient, post-rock/punk, free improvisation, sampling, and contemporary electronic techniques. In addition, Stephanie developed a photographic essay to complement the clips, exploring social Interactions, architecture, and memory in Rotterdam. These images highlight the coexistence of vibrant
cultural traditions alongside modernization patterns, offering a visual counterpoint that documents how immigrant and local communities contribute to the city’s cultural fabric.
The Clan of the Rotte River serves as a testament to Rotterdam in 2023, functioning as a cultural archive that invites reflection on the tensions and synergies between globalization and local identities. It connects the dynamics of this city with those of other urban centers around the world.
3. Vienna Crawling – Vienna Radia Collective (a show from Radia.fm)
With the programme VIENNA CRAWLING, the Vienna Radia Collective feat. Fabi Lux would like to welcome a new guest (Fabi) to Vienna and make ‘arriving in the city’ the topic of discussion.
Equipped with the sounds of the city on their way to the radio station, the group met for a radio programme in which the concept of the programme was discussed live in an on-air public editorial meeting. Fabi Lux used the material from all the participants, including the recording of this editorial meeting, as material for a remix.
Fabi mixed the sounds with DJ software, changed speeds, added effects and asked chance if it would like to contribute to the flow. VIENNA CRAWLING is a mixtape that tells of the journey, of arriving and then inviting you to take another trip.
