Conductor, composer and pianist Duke Ellington (1899-1974)
Today A Drum is a Woman, which was broadcasted by CBS – in color!! – on 8 May 1957.
It’s Ellington’s musical fantasy about the history and development of jazz music. It was the first TV special that was almost completly produced and performed by black Americans: a breakthrough! To end the show we have two pieces from Ellington’s music compiled for the movie Paris Blues, 1961.
