Dutch World Music! Episode 15: Poetry Park 1988 part 2.

Dutch World Music! is a series of broadcasts about the range of Dutch made music genres which are counted to the extensive area of world music. 
Since the eighties world music has been the collective term for folk music (also traditional music), non-western classical music, non-western pop music and mixes of that. 
In this broadcast we will look back on Poetry Park of 26 June 1988. An edition with a lot of world music bands of Dutch origin.

Since 1977 the annual Poetry International Festival has taken place in Rotterdam. It is a festival with a lot of attention for connections with film, music and visual art.
The item Poetry Park in the Park at the Euromast which is the meeting place of poets from all over the world, grew into the Dunya Festival and is one of the largest Dutch world performing arts festivals with over 200.000 visitors.
De Hasan Band has a special composition and can rightly be called a Dutch Turkish band with its Turkish bandleader Hasan Özgök. Hasan performs Turkish folk music in a Western European style of pop/funk/jazz with sometimes also African and Surinam influences. 
Joia. This formation of five plays compositions of Portuguese Femando Lameirinhas, singer of the band. Their music is Latin-American based and has connections with rhythms from Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Portugal.

Naya Roshni & Renu Sharma
. Arrangements of Indian film music, traditional Hindu music and popular dance music from the Carribbean characterize the repertoire of Amsterdam band Naya Roshni. The Indian female singer Renu Sharma performs together with the band. In her six-year career Naya Roshni has recorded several albums on which you can also hear the famous Surinam musician and arranger Stan Lokhin.

Khan Bandhu.
Ustad Mohammed Sayeed Khan and his brother perform popular and light classical Indian music with the use of tabla, tampura and harmonium. Sayeed Khan is a singing teacher of the Rotterdam Conservatorium. He descends from a family of traditional Indian musicians and is an expert in the area of phonation.
Senemali performs authentic African pop music. They perform mbalax and ndanga which are styles of music on traditional drums as well as modern western instruments from regions in West Africa from Mauritania to Ivory Coast.
