Electronic Frequencies

Jorge Sad Levi’s activities (Buenos Aires 1959), include conducting improvisation ensembles, instrumental composition, acousmatic music, research in musical semiology, production and organization of concerts, transmission of his ideas in classes, seminars and conferences.

He began his studies of electroacoustic composition at the Laboratory of Research and Musical Production (LIPM) in Buenos Aires post dictatorship of the 80s, in a context of deep social and aesthetic shock. In the 90s he emigrated to Canada and at the University of Montreal he began to explore the possibility of incorporating the timbral and gestural experience of rock in his electroacoustic productions, in works such as Ave Roc and Vox II. Back installed in Buenos Aires, inspired by the exciting aesthetic plurality of Quebec, he founded the Collective of Sound Creation, with which he produced Musics of an Imaginary Ethnia, his first CD.

Numerous scholarships and assignments such as the Rockefeller Exchange Program, the Phonos Foundation and LIEM in Spain, the GRM in Paris, the Cranelab de Bourgogne, Musiques & Recherches in Belgium, the Composers Conference in Wellesley led by Mario Davidovsky and James Baker, allow you to make residencies of creation.
Founder and Director of the Institute of Research in Sound and Music by Digital Media, IIeSMuMD, at the University of Morón, a space for the training of programmers and instrumentalists, also being the place of creation of their projects, incorporating interactive technologies, in collaboration with the choreographer Margarita Bali for those who produced the music for the monumental multimedia works Zoom in Look Out and Pizzurno Pixelado, presented at the Buenos Aires International Theater Festival.
Founder and Director of the New Music for Memory Festival at the Former Clandestine Detention Center Espacio Cultural Nuestro Hijos, Cultural Space of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, in which for the first time the world of contemporary Argentine classical music speaks out against the military dictatorship in more than 100 concerts including composers, performers and ensembles from all over the country.

His discography includes “Music of an Imaginary Ethnia” (2001), for four improvisers and live electronics, “Retransmission” (2005) for three musicians, video images and live electronics, based on “Pour en finir avec le jugement de dieu ”by Antonin Artaud, Music for speaking beings, edited by Luscinia Discos in Spain, in addition to several pieces included in collective editions in Belgium, Argentina and Spain. He currently directs the Seres / Parlantes Ensemble, is a professor of Musical Semiotics at the University of Tres de Febrero, his music is edited by BabelScores and the ElektraMusic label.

Musicas De Una Etnia Imaginaria.
Five pieces for instruments and real time electronics. A new album conceived in collaboration with Juliana Moreno (flute), Martín Devoto (cello), Enrique Entenza (bandoneon) and Germán Meira (electric guitar), combining instruments and electronics. The ensemble was conceived as an imaginary ethnic group which admires and is inspired in equal parts by the music of Kaja Saariaho and Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles and Bernard Parmegiani. The process of recording and mixing the pieces that are part of this album was conceived as a manner of sonic writing, not abstract symbols but sound itself.

Retransmisión.
Retransmisión is a collective creation based on Antonin Artaud’s radiophonic work Pour en finir avec le jugement de Dieu [To Have Done With the Judgment of God], for three improvisers, live electronics, and edited video images. Composed by Jorge Sad Levi, with the Gest(u)alt Ensamble (Juliana Moreno, flute; Claudio Eiriz, percussion and vocals; Javier Mariani, clarinet and wakra-phuku; Francisco Colasanto, Max/MSP programming and computer; Gabriel Gendin, audio engineer), and video images by Deborah Lynne.

The old vinyl recordings of the performance have been digitalized without any restoration process, in order to leave “the sound of time” untouched. The sonic character of the voice of Artaud and the other actors (María Casares and Roger Blin), their visceral inflexions and strong sound qualities, were the models that we have taken to elaborate the character of the different sections of the work. Retransmisión is an hommage to Artaud and his prophetic vision of the 21st century: cloning for military purposes, wars made by remote control to impose american products, destruction of nature.
