Trío Maravilla y Manuel Jiménez.
A programme like this should have a name, shouldn’t it? So ‘Trío Maravilla y Manuel Jiménez’. But actually we would like to spotlight José Juan García or Chiquitín García. He started as singer and guitar player (or with maracas) with the famous Cuarteto Mayarí of composer and trumpet player Plácido Acevedo Sosa in 1938. We met him in several Puerto Rican ensembles including bands under his own name and finally he became musical director of the same Cuarteto Mayarí in the seventies. In 1940 he was part of the established sublime Trío Maravilla. In New York in cafés and small restaurants they reaped enormous success. Next with the also very famous Manuel Jiménez y Su Cuarteto from the Jiménez family. Manuel Jiménez also started at Plácido Acevedo in 1938. In this programme you will only hear extracts of the repertoire of these 2 ensembles and we will keep his merengue specialities for granted.
