Jon Gibson: modest virtuoso composer and saxophone player Jon Gibson (1940) occupies a unique place in the American contemporary musical landscape. He is one of few musicians who has worked together with the four founders of minimalism. As a saxophone virtuoso Jon Gibson still inexhaustibly tours with the Philip Glass Ensemble, but he has also created an oeuvre completely of his own. Over the past few years he has managed to free himself more easily from his role models, and more of his music is available on the market. Recently his fascinating ballet music for ‘Relative Calm’ (1981) was recorded. In this episode of Feature a profile of Jon Gibson’s oeuvre will pass in review.
