The three singers Sigrid Hausen, Mara Aranda and Iman al Kandoussi, that you see on the photo above, form the basis of Al Andaluz Project, a fascinating collaboration between the Spanish traditional folk group L’Ham de Foc and the German medieval band Estampie. The band members play instruments like oud, saz, hurdy-gurdy, nyckelharp en rabab.
Also in this episode of Folk It! the Mongolian folk-rock band Altan Urag, – who, among other things, play the morin khuur, a violin with a horses head and bishguur, a Mongolian horn. In the movie Khadak – about nomads in Mongolia who are forced to move to a mine to work there so entrepreneurs can exploit their land for mining, Altan Urag is seen and heard regularly. We’ll start off this Folk It! with folk rock and end with psych rock, among others from the Dutch psychedelic band Group 1850 from The Hague and the British space rock band Hawkwind Selma. Selma is an Amsterdam singer-songwriter who of course can be found on Amsterdam stages regularly. She plays the baglam, a Turkish lute and has been inspired by Oriental sounds in her music, that she makes together with the Iranian percussionist Babak Amiri and Turkish contra bass player Ela Yatmaz.Dressed as a viking the in 1916 born, blind Louis T. Hardin, known as Moondog, performed in the streets of New York.An appeal to stop littering our earth comes from the anarcho punk band Anarka and Poppy from the eighties, formed by animal rights activists from the local squatter scene of Preston. Also Jim Morrison wants to remind us of this in his song ‘Not To Touch The Earth’.
