Behind the Wall:
Folk It! #2. On the 9th of November 1989the Berlin Wall fell. Now, 25 years later, we look back in two episodes of Folk it! to the folk music that was produced in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union before the fall of the Berlin Wall.
In part two we fully focus on the folk music and associated streams from the former DDR (German Democratic Republic). The liedermacher are not to be missed, they are the German equivalents of singer songwriters or chansonniers. The liedermacher were politically critic. The annual ‘Festival des politischen liedes’ was an important event in Berlin: a festival with international artists from all over the world, engaged Western musicians and acts from left-oriented countries.But the DDR itself also had its folk groups that, strongly influenced by the western folk revival, worked on the joint German cultural heritage.
