In two episodes we will be seeking for ‘the other Sandy Denny’. The British singer-songwriter died 37 years ago but until today she is still considered to be one of the best singer-songwriters of England. Many times the label ‘successor of…’ or ‘the new…’ was given. We don’t really like such superlatives. Let’s be honest: there is only one Sandy Denny and she is unprecedented. But she also had and has some talented and equivalent colleagues. In this first episode we will be looking for contemporaries who may have been considered a competitor, inspirator, successor or maybe even just a copy-cat. We will meet Vashti Bunyan, who later became some sort of cult figure, and Shelagh McDonald, the tragic match of Denny. The fact that Denny herself was influenced by her contemporaries strikingly shows with Anne Briggs. And then there is outsider Bridget St John: a woman composer, gifted with the song textures of Nick Drake and the voice of Velvet Underground female singer Nico.
