In 2015, the Mads Hansens Kapel was founded by 5 young men who shared their love for Danish folk music. They have only one rule: “First have fun, then ask questions”. Their performances can be both for a seated and a dancing audience.
Some members of the Mads Hansen Kapel are also part of the 12-member big folk orchestra Mynsterland, which released a number of pieces of a concert recording by the name of LIVE fra Svendborg Teater earlier this year.
The CD “Handmade Tales” was released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Tradish: An Irish-Danish folk group that mainly plays and sings Irish folk music.
Another band reaching across the Danish borders is Spöket i Köket, freely translated as “the ghost in the kitchen” has existed since 2015 and its music has Danish and Canadian influences. With is members from Denmark, Sweden and Belgium, it is not an entire Danish formation.
Phønix is one of Denmark’s best-known folk bands and was founded in 1990 by four enthusiastic youngsters who wanted to release Danish folk from its stuffy image of old people in traditional costume dancing on music played from music sheets. Initially, they looked for early, noted music to arrange in order to make it more appealing to the contemporary audience. This sometimes meant that ballads of over 70 verses had to be shortened to a ballad of only a couple of minutes.
Today, the Danish Phønix consists of Anja Præst Mikkelsen (clarinet), Jesper Falch (drums), Karen Mose (vocals) and Jesper Vinther Pedersen (accordion). Phønix is still performing, often combining children’s matinees with evening concerts. Circa 2000, they were also involved in the creation of an educational programme for folk musicians at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense!
