Folk it Mediterranean focuses on the musical riches of the Mediterranean.
Episode: Oskorri
The group was formed in the early 1970s at a time when, culturally, the movement ‘Ez Dok Amairu’ was active. ‘Ez Dok Amairu’ translates to ‘There is no 13’, in which the number 13 symbolises evil.
This movement, represented by Benito Lertxundi and Mikel Laboa among others, was active between 1965 and 1972 and championed the rediscovery and development of Basque language and culture. Music by Benito Lertxundi and Mikel Laboa has been played earlier in FolkIt episodes on last 12 january 2025 and 8 December 2024.
Oskorri, who started performing in 1971, were also renewing Basque songs and dance music of the past. They released many records between 1976 and 2016, some with children’s songs, some with early Basque dance music. Their CDs with Basque songs hold a special place: The Pub Ibiltaria. It is a series of 13 double-CD’s. The songs are sung by Oskorri, accompanied by the audience, and recorded live. There usually also is a CD with only the accompaniment of the songs: i.e. the karaoke versions, where the idea is to sing along.
