In this episode, part 3 in a series about the music of the Greek isle of Crete. The previous parts were broadcasted on 29 November 2018 and 31 January of this year. In these previous episodes recordings could be heard which were made until approximately 1990. In this episode you will hear recordings which were made between 1990 and now.
Eventually, the music was hardly known outside Crete and every city and every village had its own ways.
This changed during the 1920s, when the first records were produced. The inhabitants, among which are included the interpreters of Crete’s music, also hear music from other parts of Crete and a lively performance practice comes into being. In the 1960s interest is shown outside Crete for its special music, also due to Nikos Xilouris (as innovator) and Kosta Mountakis (who listened well to others). Mountakis gets the assignment at the conservatory of Athens, to improve the knowledge of and the skill in the music of Crete. Xilouris (Psaronikos) is brother to Psarantonis (Antonis) and Yiannis (Psaroyiannis) and uncle of Giorgis.
What is also special, is the role of two people who were not born on Crete: lyrist Ross Daly as innovator and, later, percussionist Jim White as the one who added jazz influences.
Except for Nikos (who died in 1980), they can all be heard.
Those who have been on Crete must have realized how this music is still alive, without impairing the music of a century ago…
