In this programme, a portraut of 27-year old singer Kaushiki Chakrabarty. In 2005, the North Indian raga singer Kaushiki Chakrabarty gained great international esteem in winning the prestigious BBC World Music Award for her live album ‘Pure’. It was her worldwide breakthrough in front of a large audience of people who love world music. Among North Indian raga music experts, she is seen as the singer who has everything to become the greatest North Indian raga singer this century. Kaushiki Chakrabarty, born in Calcutta in 1980, comes from a very music-oriented family. Her father, Ajoy Chakrabarty (born 1953) is one of India’s prominent raga singers. It soon became clear that Kaushiki was a musical prodigy. According to her mother Chandana Chakrabarty, Kaushiki’s first musical guru, her daughter could sing before she could speak, and was able to perfectly repeat complex melodic and rhythmic phrases at age two. At age seven, she was taught according to the Indian guru-shishya (tutor-pupil) 1 on 1 educational system, a very intense training course during which they go over the North Indian classical music repertoire by means of oral communication. Kaushiki Chakrabarty focuses mainly on two singing styles, the classical Khayal style and the semi-classical Thumri style. Kaushiki’s vocals and repertoire was formed within the famous Patiala Kasur gharana. In this programme, Kaushiki Chakrabarty speaks to Pieter de Rooij about her musical career up to now, and you can listen to her music as well as various other recordings from the Patiala Kasur tradition, including ones from her father and guru Ajoy Chakrabarty and of the legendary singer Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
