Dutch Jazz on CD, compiled by Jan Verwey.
Theme: new productions.
Mateusz Pulawski is a guitarist with a lively
way of playing. I know this, because I did a few performances
with him. This time he has chosen to make a digital album.
Since there are no concerts, no CDs are sold, that’s why many musicians
do it in this way: digital. Together with the Taiwanese singer
and flute player Yen Ting Lo Mateusz wrote and
played music to fill up this album. Themes: the sun, the earth,
space travel, moon landings etc. It is rather exciting music, influenced
by styles such as hip hop, rock and, of course, jazz.
Jurgen Burdorf, also a guitarist, is a new name to me, but he plays
with experienced jazz musicians. All pieces have been written by
himself, and the ensemble is excellent, pleasant to listen to.
Composition: guitar, keyboard, bass and drums.
Next: trio HOT, meaning Het Orgel Trio (The Organ Trio).
One would expect Hammond B3, but that is not the case, Berry van Berkum
plays a real church organ (pipe-organ): the Verschueren organ in the
Antonius van Padua church in the town of Nijmegen. He plays an ode to
Duke Ellington. I chose well-known pieces, among which
Come Sunday, which even sounds a little pious, and Mood Indigo, a
beautiful colour. It is a special record, with beside Berry, who is a clarinet player,
also a trumpet player and a trombone player.
We conclude with the CD of Angelo Verploegen – Wim Bronnenberg –
Jasper van Hulten. Three seasoned musicians, who all three have won their spurs by playing in several ensembles in the last few decades. On this album you find splendid solo work and fine pieces from the Real Book. Highly recommended, this CD.
