Episode XXXI:
For three years, Hummels spends every free moment on writing a voluminous piano book. It is published simultaneously in Germany, Austria, France and England and sells like hot cakes. In addition to thousands of études, Hummel also includes recital pieces by colleagues such as Clementi, Dussek and Kozeluh. Hummel goes on a concert tour via Paris to London for six months in 1830, and of course he has to compose new music for that. We will conclude this episode with Hummel’s variations on ‘O! Du lieber Augustin’, a popular song which is known in The Netherlands as ‘Daar wordt aan de deur geklopt’.
