Inventions for Radio presents the work of the Los Angeles based filmmaker, writer and DJ Arshia Fatima Haq. In this episode Haq will give an impression of her project Discostan: about different musical narratives from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia and eastward to the edge of the earth – from Beirut to Bangkok via Bombay.
Discostan is a collective of artists curating sound, image and text from an imagined federation of states spanning the regions of Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia and eastward to the edge of the earth – from Beirut to Bangkok via Bombay. Narrative threads include migration, celebration, warfare, nostalgia, homeland, borders, often within realms of Islamic influence, through the lenses of timeless traditional forms, the kaleidoscopic reinventions of pop culture, and everything in between and beyond. Most simply, Discostan is a love letter to the Dis-Orient. Discostan materializes monthly in the Los Angeles nightclub landscape and in radio form virtually on radiosombra.org and soundcloud.com/discostan. Radio Discostan has featured guest appearances by the likes of Alan Bishop of Sublime Frequencies (for whom Arshia frequently writes), Jonathan Ward of Excavated Shellac, and Myke Weiskopf of Shortwave Music.
Arshia Fatima Haq is a filmmaker, writer, and DJ based in Los Angeles. She has an MFA in Film and Video from California Institute of the Arts and works in both commercial and experimental forms. She is also the founder of Discostan.
