L’Esprit Baroque

In order to make his music sound even more melancholy, mysterious 17th-century gambist Sieur de Sainte-Colombe added a 7th low string to the viola da gamba.
By doing this he improved the range and the ability to play chords on this instrument, something that is very important and typical in the repertoire of French gamba.
Besides Hille Perl you can also hear gambists Jordi Savall and Vittorio Ghielmi, who also play music of Colombe’s pupil: Marin Marais.
