Mambo is celebrating a milestone today: the 100th episode of of this programme about Latino music.
In this anniversary episode, we’re starting a 4-part series on the orchestra La Sonora Ponceňa, which is particularly popular in both Puerto Rico and New York City. The music group was an heirloom, whose leadership passed from father to son. The father, Quique Lucca, founded the orchestra in 1958.
In 1968, his son Papo Lucca became the conductor of the orchestra. The first album under his direction was released in 1972. We will play some songs from that record at the beginning of this episode.
At the age of 12, Papo Lucca already played in his father’s orchestra regularly. Later on, he composed and arranged the music of La Sonora Ponceňa. He also played various instruments: piano, vibraphone, Cuban guitar and percussion.
