Today in Mambo, the second part of the 4-part series on the Puerto Rican orchestra La Sonora Ponceňa. We are focusing on the peak years 1975 and 1976.
Since 1968, the orchestra had been under the musical direction of Papo Lucca, who attended all kinds of music schools from the age of 6, eventually graduating from the conservatoire at the University of Puerto Rico. The orchestra conductor was a multi-instrumentalist, but nevertheless he was most often considered a pianist in La Sonora Ponceňa.
The music of this orchestra has always been anchored in the so-called Clave, the basis of the rhythm pattern of Cuban dance music. You will hear La Clave as the 4th song in this episode.
La Sonora Ponceňa mainly drew on Cuban dance music, at the same time incorporating Puerto Rican folk music into their oeuvre. As a testament, you will hear both a bomba (an Afro-Puerto Rican dance) and a so-called zogeheten jibaro (the music of the poor farmers of the inland) in this episode.
