Today in Mambo, the 3rd episode of the series about the Puerto Rican orchestra La Sonora Ponceňa. In this episode we will focus on the years 1977 and 1978.
The musical group was particularly popular in Puerto Rico and in New York City as well. Cuban dance music was a big inspiration for the orchestra, but they never forgot their Puerto Rican roots.
In the 1970s, La Sonora Ponceňa recorded the most albums. And the end of that decade, singer Yolanda Rivera joined the orchestra. She was one of the few female vocalists in that scene.
In 1978, the musical group celebrated their 20th anniversary by recording an album that is still regarded as the very best. On that album, Yolanda Rivera and Tito Gomez are the vocalists.
