Mariama

After the independence in 1958 president Sekou Touré introduced a culture policy of authenticité in Guinea, where artists were instructed to look at ‘their past’ and to let traditional elements sound through their music. He supported similar groups with instruments and releases on the national label Syliphone. This policy to promote cultural identity produced a variety of federal and national orchestras. When Sekou Touré died in 1984, this system of authenticité completely collapsed. In this episode you will hear music from Guinea golden musical years, the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s.
