Malouma staat bekend als een militante zangeres en woordvoerder van de vrouwenrechten in het islamitische land. Ze is ook de eerste muzikant die moderne Mauritaanse muziek introduceert bij het publiek. De muziek van deze getalenteerde zangeres en componist is een mix van traditionele Mauritaanse en moderne westerse klankkleuren.
