Special Instruments (Harp part 2).
Queen Mary harp
We continue our exploration of the harp in the series Metamorfosen Special Instruments. We discussed the origin of the harp in Africa in part 1, we listened to harp-related instruments from Madagascar and the kora from Mali. We continued our journey in the Asian continent with harps from Georgia, China, Mongolia, Burma and Japan. The European pedal harp brought us back to this part of the world. In part two we dive into the history of the European harps, including the bray harp, the Arpia doppio, the Welsh triple harp, the clarsach and from the wire strung harp to the electric harp. We hear how the compositions of famous blind Irish bard and harpist Turlough O’Carolan probably must have sounded in his time, we will listen to two types of harps from Central Europe, and we will finish with an instrument which bears the addition harp in its name, but is in fact not counted among the harps. Like we did in the previous episode, the probably best known harp player of the last century, Breton Alan Stivell will begin this broadcast and this time he may also close.
