World music NL Episode 12
World Music NL! is a series of broadcasts about the wide range of music genres made in the Netherlands which are part of the extensive area of world music. Since the eighties, world music became a collective term for folk music (also called traditional music), non-Western classical music, non-Western pop music and mixed formats of the above.
In this episode you can hear part 2 of the compliation (cassette) tapes ‘World-beats made in Holland 1 en 2’ by Multi Music Federation (MMF) from 1990 and 1991.
In 1989 the foundation Multi Music Federation was set up as a combination of the Surinam Music Association (SMA) and Barak G, an organisation for Moluccan music. SMA was founded in 1980 to generate more attention for Surinam and Antillian music. SMA developed itself in multiple areas by organising concerts, the production of 12 sound carriers, making a trilogy music documentary for the NOS and a book about Surinam music. The combination of the 2 organisations in 1989 was a condition set by the ministry of WVC (Welfare, Health and Culture) to apply for subsidies. The assignment of the joint organisation was to stimulate, develop and professionalise the immigrant music in the Netherlands. In its third year of existence, the MMF was discontinued, mainly due to internal problems and the work field being too broad. Eventhough the Board of Culture did plea (in its plans for the period 2005-2008) for the importance of a knowledge centre for non-western music, they did not succeed in establishing an organisation as such anymore in the years after.
In its short period of existence, the MMF did not leave much (digital) traces but they did publish 2 compilation (cassette) tapes containing world music of Dutch origin, represented by the following bands:
Yilmaz and his band Turbo play Turkish pop funk with a combination of traditional and modern instruments.
Senemali, Sloopy Sankofa and Chi-Ken-Chee & Akwaaba play danceable African pop music. The Sundance Kid is one of the promising young reggae bands in the Netherlands.
The Gambian band Ifang Bondi has developed itself in the Netherlands into one of the leading bands with their unique style called ‘Afromanding Sound’.
Congarlia is a project devoted to Afro Cuban music.Three well-known percussion players are involved: the Japanese Moluccan Nippy Noya, the Antillian Martin Verdonk and the American Raul Rekow from the band Santana. Lowik vande Velden plays the guitar.
Joia consists of the Portuguese brothers Fernando and Antonio Lameirinhas. They combine Portuguese, Angolese and Mozambican traditions with heavy Brazilian influences, Latin American styles, jazz and pop.
The Dutch-Surinam reggae band Roots Syndicate from Rotterdam plays various styles of pop oriented reggae music, among which Lovers rock, Roots Reggae and Dancehall.
Super & the Allstars is one of the promising young ragga-muffin bands who combine dance and socially rooted reggae.
Moluccan Moods Orchestra was founded in 1987 and plays reworks of the Moluccan traditionals (Eastern Indonesia), sung in Moluccan languages with a pop instrumentarium.
The orchestra Cita Con el Pasado was founded in 1986 and made up by musicians with a Dutch, Carribean and Latin American background. The music contains the historical development of the orchestral merengue from the thirties up to present.
Unisono is the most successful dance band of the Antillian community in the Netherlands. The core element in the repertoire is salsa antyana, a modern format of traditional Antillian tumba influenced by merengue, calypso and cumbia from Latin America.
