Wereldmuziek NL! Episode 13: Multi Music Federation 3 and Poetry Park 1988.

Wereldmuziek NL! is a series of broadcasts about the wide range of music genres made in the Netherlands which are a part of the extensive area of world music. Since the eighties, world music became a collective term for folk music (also called traditional music), non-Western classical music, non-Western pop music and mixed formats of the above.
In this episode you can hear part 3 of the compilation cassettes ‘World-beats made in Holland’ by Multi Music Federation (MMF) from 1991 and part 1 of Poetry Park 1988.
In 1989 the foundation Multi Music Federation was set up as a combination of the Surinam Music Association (SMA) and Barak G, an organisation for Moluccan music. In 1980 SMA was founded to generate more attention for Surinam and Antillean music. The assignment of the joint organisation was to stimulate, develop and professionalise the music of immigrants in the Netherlands. In its third year of existence, the MMF was discontinued, mainly due to internal problems and the work field being too broad. In its short period of existence, the MMF did not leave many (digital) traces but they did publish two compilation cassettes containing world music of Dutch origin, represented by the following bands.
NUEVA MANTECA bases itself on the original Cubop draft with the goal to enlarge Latin Jazz in a repertoire which contains traditional and new compositions of European, North and South American composers. The professional musicians will be accompanied by the New York and Puerto Rican percussion player Nicky Marrero (Fania All Stars).
TELAPARY is the last name of the two Moluccan brothers Eddy and Michael and also the stage name with which these two guitar virtuosos perform. They created their own style influenced by gipsy guitar music and Latin-American swing. The music also reminds of the jazz rock sounds of John McLaughlin and AI DiMeola and flamenco guitar player Paco de Lucia.
PATRICIO WANG was born in Santiago Chili in 1952. He studied composition and classical guitar at the National Conservatoire in Chili and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Wang composes for soloists as well as ensembles and he composed for film, dance and theatre on a regular basis since 1977. He also had musical direction of the well-known Chilean ensemble Quilapayun in Paris.
The experimental music of the Ujung Collective is based on Indonesian musical tradition. After a ‘musical intermezzo’ in the punk rock scene traditional rhythms were combined with gamelan motives, now played on electric guitar.
Irama is a Balinese music ensemble established in Amsterdam. One of the Balinese genres they play is the Gender Wayang (Batel) music. This music accompanies Balinese shadow puppet theatre and is also played at ceremonious occasions like weddings and cremations. Feature of the music is the repetition of interlocking melodic and rhythmic patterns, sometimes in high tempo and interrupted by sudden breaks.
The music of a folk band out of the north of the Netherlands, Orient Express, has its roots in Balkan music and the Mediterranean. Part of this varied repertoire of this band are new arrangements of traditional songs and dance melodies from Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Italy.
The EDUARD SEBASTIAN KRONTJONG ENSEMBLE is known as the leading exponent of the new krontjong music. Krontjong is the collective term for popular melodic and melancholic songs sung in the whole of Indonesia (Molucca Islands in particular and later on in parts of Java). In general it is thought that this is a mix of old Portuguese fado and local music.
Cajun and Zydeco is music of the descendants of French colonists in the American state Louisiana. CAPTAIN GUMBO is one of the well-known Cajun bands in the Netherlands where renewed international interest for this style also made headway. Cajun music in its original form was for a voice accompanied by fiddle and triangle. Later on the accordion became the most important instrument.
The band TIPICA MANZANA is specialised in merengue tipico, also known as merengue ripiao. This kind of orchestral merengue from the rural region of Cibao in the north of the Dominican Republic was played in ‘salons’ and dance halls in capital Santo Domingo since the 1920s. The primarily Dutch band is a fixed part at Latin-American dance nights and cultural events.
Poetry Park was predecessor of the Dunya Festival, one of the largest world performing arts festivals of the Netherlands. The Dunya Festival is performing arts festival with world music, storytellers and poets. Poetry Park was the meeting place of poets from all over the world and happened annually in the park near the Euromast in Rotterdam from 1977 till 2012.
A lot of world music bands of Dutch origin performed in the edition of 19 June 1988.
Resurrection Singers. A choir of thirty men and women sings Negro spirituals and gospels at a swinging rhythm. In The Park they are being accompanied by a combo of well-known Surinam musicians.
