Music from Iran, with a focus on the Tanbur and the Tombak.
In this Metamorphoses, two CDs from Iran.
First off, Kurdish maqams, composed and arranged by tanbur player Ali Akbar Moradi of the recently released CD Goblets of Eternal Light.
The lyrics were written by famous poets like Mahwi, Naali and Guran.
The singer is Bahar Mavahed, who, after studying for years with Hamid Reza Noorbakhsh among others, developed into a gifted Maqam singer. She is also an excellent tanbur player.
On Daf you can hear Ali Rihimi.
For the second CD, Geradeaus by Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, master Tombak player.
Mohammad Reza Mortazavi (born in Isfahan/Iran in 1978) started playing the tombak as early as 6 years of age. When he was ten, he won the annual Iranian tombak competition, in which only the best musicians of the country take part.
His way of performing goes beyond the traditional tombak music – he developed more than thirty new ingenious percussion and finger techniques, which made him into a unique musician who gets praise from all over the world.
